Dear New Moon Girls and allies:
I’m reaching out to ALL our members this morning because this is a very important time for NMG and what we believe and stand for. No Hate.
Yesterday I felt excited that the USA would elect its first woman president. As I write this it looks like Hillary Clinton won the national popular vote election by more than 1% which is inspiring and historic.
It’s definitely past time for our country and the world to have many more women leaders in the highest positions, in government and in business. Personally, I feel stunned and very sad about the result of the election.
At the same time, I value and am proud that our NMG community has members with a wide range of political views. It gives us the chance to listen to each other and discuss politics with people we respect and care about, even if they feel very differently than we do. I truly believe that diversity of opinions and life experiences is the greatest strength of the USA at home and in the world.
Now that the election is over, this is a time for all of us here, and in the rest of our lives, to work harder than ever to listen to and be kind to each other as human beings. This is true even if some people are not listening to us or being kind to us. We must have the courage and integrity to treat them the way we want to be treated. We believe in going high even when others go low, as Michelle Obama says.
Along with you and many others, we will keep building the world of mutual respect and human dignity we care about–as NMG has been doing since 1992.
This means that we won’t allow posts expressing hate of any kind in our community. This has always been our policy and to me it’s more important than ever before. If you see any posts that you feel are hate speech or a different problem: use the Report an Issue link at the bottom of every page. These reports go directly to NMG staff, and they will take care of it.
Anger, distress, sadness, shock, fear, hope….we want you to express all of those feelings and more within the safety and support of NMG. We always have and always will honor your feelings–along with honest, respectful conversation and disagreement. We don’t accept hate. Join us on How Are You Feeling About the Election and Building the World of Mutual Respect and Human Dignity We Care About for discussions of the election and what we can do next together.
I and all the adults at NMG look up to you girls. You are the future! The most special thing about NMG to me is how we all learn from each other. Girls learning from each other and from the adults. Adults learning so much from the girls and from each other. Learning when we agree with each other and when we disagree. Learning when it’s easy–and especially when it’s so hard to learn that it hurts.
You give me the energy and determination to keep lifting up girls’ voices and true selves out in the world so you can build a better world for all of us. It takes grit and you have plenty of that!
Knowing that we’re in this together with you makes all the difference.
With my love and respect for each and every one of you,
