Editorial Guidelines: We show girls as powerful, active, interesting makers in charge of their lives – not as passive beings who are acted upon or watching others. We celebrate girls and all their accomplishments. We support girls to express their voices, opinions, problems, needs and dreams as they grow from girlhood to womanhood. We support girls in reaching out and being allies to each other, even when they disagree.
NMG is created by girls and women for girls who want their voices heard and their dreams taken seriously. It’s edited by and for girls ages 8 and up. We take girls seriously and girls use their power here. Our final products are collaborations of girls and adult allies. Our editorial board of girls ages 8-14 makes final decisions on content for the magazine and website.
Be Sure You Have Read Multiple Issues of NMG: Take the time and care to familiarize yourself with our subject matter, style, and interests before you submit anything to us. Many libraries, some bookstores, and our store on this site sell single copies.
Global Village: (600 words) First-person piece written by a girl who is a native of and lives outside of the USA. Adults can be the link to girls they know personally who could write one of these features. The adult can help translate and also write the accompanying material about the country and its historic women, the overall status of women and girls in the country, an easy recipe for a national favorite dish, etc.
Herstory: (600 words) Profiles girls, women, or events pertaining to them from history. Herstory articles have the best chance of acceptance if they fit with an editorial theme.
Women’s Work: (600 words) Profiles a woman in her chosen career. Best chance of acceptance if it fits with an editorial theme.
Fiction: (900 – 1600 words) Short stories in which the main character is a girl(s) age 8 and up and includes subject matter and a plot that shows the power of girls this age. Remember that our mission is to let girls tell the world who they are. We don’t tell girls who they should be. We aren’t interested in “perfect” characters or people. Best chance of acceptance if it fits with an editorial theme.
For The Curious: (300-600 words) Hands-on science, tech, engineering and math activities that relate to girls’ daily lives and/or imagined futures.
- We sometimes hold articles for consideration for up to two years. In the meantime, it’s OK if you submit your work elsewhere. Please don’t email or call to check on the status of your work – we’ll notify you when we make a final decision.
- New Moon is a magazine for girls and by girls. An article written by a girl will ALWAYS take precedence over an adult-written article of a similar nature.
- Adults can send in suggestions of girls to profile, but we will always ask the girl to write the article herself rather than having an adult write about her.
- Keep original copies of your work for your own files.
Art Guidelines: We welcome submissions from adult illustrators and photographers who want to support our mission. We’re not able to pay for any writing or illustrations, but we very much appreciate your support, and we promote the work of our supporters in the magazine and in our social media outreach.
